On Thursday, dozens of students gathered before class for a short memorial service one day after a 15 year old girl shot and killed another in a crowded hallway. Some students wore black as others brought flowers and teddy bears outside Dillard High School. Some prayed. Teah Wimberly, a sophomore, was charged with first degree murder and discharging a weapon on school property in the murdering of Amanda Collette. Investigators are saying that Wimberly shot Collette, before walking to a seafood restaurant to turn herself in. Wimberly has been ordered to be held for 21 days at court and is going to undergo a psychological evaluation. Prosecutors are saying they could charge her as an adult.
The shooting around 11 a.m. Wednesday made students scream and run when the victim fell to the floor, but authorities didn't immediately know a shot had been fired. A sophomore reported that the girls were arguing in an outside corridor when Wimberly pulled out the gun and shot. The school was on lock down for a short time but classes soon resumed. Students do not pass through metal detectors but there are cameras and police throughout the campus.

It's incredible how insecure schools can be. Now students have to worry when they go to a place where they are supposed to be safe and secure. This shows that it can happen anywhere at anytime and just because it hadn't happened in Broward County for so many years it doesn't mean that it's impossible. However, it's an astonishment how just a young girl is capable of doing such atrocity. I think there should be a way to control more these situations because it can obviously happen again.
It's not just the fact that school is unsafe, everywhere you go you face the danger of possibly getting assaulted. Teachers and security staff try to do the best they can to keep us safe but evidently sometimes it is just not good enough. No this school did not have metal detectors that you had to pass through to get to class, but how are you supposed to get four thousand students through a metal detector everyday. In order to do this you would have to start school at around 2 a.m. because it would take many hours.
